Crownpoint, NM – Since its beginning as Navajo Skills Center in 1979, NTU has expanded with programs accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) allowing students to earn college credits toward a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree. Most recent endorsements at NTU are the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Culinary Federation (ACF), and National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

“We are offering our students a quality education at NTU and an opportunity to become experts in a profession from one of our accredited certificate programs or degrees they want to pursue,” said Dr. Casmir Agbaraji, Dean of Students at NTU, as he discussed the accredited programs that are offered at the university. “Currently, we are working to achieve national accreditation for our business administration program through the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), and our Automotive Technology with the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF).”

The university offers programs that are designed as pathways to either advance them onto other institutions or rewarding careers. The university’s mission is to provide the environment for higher education learning that allows students to seek opportunities outside of the Navajo Nation. With the established accredited degree programs, students are able to transfer their credits to continue on their educational journey, or find employment opportunities on the Navajo Reservation and border towns.

“The students in each of our programs from culinary arts to construction technology are learning all of the latest trends that will give them an advantage in the industry, we are constantly getting new ideas and staying informed from our partners,” said Joe Chapa, Dean of Applied Technology at NTU. “We are also encouraging departments to explore ideas by working together such as welding and the energy systems to possibly teach the fabrication of solar powered cars, this is only the tip of what we want to do at NTU.”

Included with the accredited programs at NTU is the opportunity to apply for the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship. The scholarship awards eligible students from New Mexico $1020.00 per semester for up to seven semesters. Students applying for the New Mexico Lottery scholarship must enroll into an accredited institution such as NTU within 16 months after graduating from high school.
